The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the flagship international educational exchange initiative sponsored by the U.S. government. It fosters mutual understanding through academic and cultural collaboration, enabling outstanding American graduates, graduate students, and young professionals to study, conduct research, or teach English in over 140 countries.

About the Fulbright U.S. Student Fully Funded Grant Program

The program, administered by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and carried out with the assistance of a global network of bi-national commissions and US embassies, provides fully financed awards in a wide range of academic subjects.

    Types of Fulbright Scholarships

    • Foreign Student Program

Full or partial financing for master’s, doctoral, or non-degree research at a US university. The biggest Fulbright program.

    • Visiting Scholars Program

Post-doctoral academics and professionals can do research or lecture at US institutions for 3-12 months.

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Applicants must be citizens or nationals of the United States of America as of the application deadline.
    • Permanent residents aren’t eligible. Please study the specific Award Description regarding the eligibility of dual citizens applying to their country of additional citizenship.
    • Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent before the start of the award period.
    • This includes applicants who are enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program and will graduate or have their degree awarded before the grant start date of their preferred award.
    • The fundamental eligibility criteria for the creative and performing arts professions are four years of professional training and/or experience. If you are an Arts applicant without a BA, please email fbstudent@iie.org with your professional experience and educational background to ensure eligibility before commencing your application.
    • Applicants must meet the language requirements of the award for which they are applying, as well as demonstrate adequate competency to complete their project and adjust to life in the host country. Please see the Award Description for award-specific language requirements.
    • Applicants may have a J.D. at the time of application.
    • Doctors of Medicine can receive grants for advanced academic studies, but not for internships or residencies. Scholars with an M.D. degree who have completed their formal postgraduate training and wish to join a hospital or clinic for independent or collaborative research should apply to the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.
    • Grants shall not authorize activities that need a license to practice medicine or nursing. The Fulbright Program does not approve proposals for medical research that include clinical training, patient care, or patient contact.

    Award Benefits

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant numbers are contingent on the availability of federally approved monies. The United States Department of State maintains the right to change participating nations, award numbers, terms of agreement, and allowances without prior notification.

All Fulbright U.S. student awards come with the following benefits:

    • Accident and Sickness Health Benefits
    • 24/7 service for both urgent and non-urgent circumstances.
    • 12 months of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) hiring status in the federal government.
    • A stipend that is roughly equivalent to the cost of living in the host country. The grantee may utilize these monies to cover accommodation, board, and incidental charges during the award period.
    • Round-trip travel to the host country.
    • Pre-departure or in-country orientations

Please study the website of the appropriate Fulbright Commission, as benefits may vary greatly.

Depending on the award and country, certain grants may also include:

    • Book and research allowances
    • Mid-term enrichment activities.
    • Full or partial tuition

    How to Apply

    • Applications must be completed online.
    • All applicants must fill out the application forms completely and upload all supporting documents online, including three academic and professional references, a Curriculum Vitae, academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended, and a writing sample.
    • Applicants should log in to the website, provide their email address, and create a password. Please remember this password because it will be used throughout the application process. Before completing the paperwork, applicants should carefully study the instructions that come with the application and seek advice from senior colleagues who are Fulbright alumni. All FFSP program applicants should indicate “Visiting Researcher” or “non-degree” as their degree objective on their applications.

A full breakdown on completing the application. A full application contains:

    • A well-articulated research purpose.
    • Professional resume.
    • Three letters of reference describing the candidate’s personal, academic, and professional qualifications (sent electronically and attached to the online application).
    • A student’s copy of academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended should be scanned and linked to the online application, if available.
    • TOEFL score report.
    • Applicants with specific issues not covered by the online application guidelines can send them to Nigeriafulbright@state.gov.

    Dates and Deadlines

Fulbright requires precise timing, and missing a deadline means having to wait another year. Applications for the 2026-27 cycle were officially available in March 2026. The most important date to mark in your calendar is October 7, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, which is the firm deadline for submissions. No extensions or exclusions.

    Conclusion

The Fulbright Program is the world’s biggest international educational exchange effort, sponsored by the United States government since 1946. Over 400,000 people have studied, taught, and conducted research in 160+ countries.
